Maybe you don’t cast circles. Maybe you just know when not to answer the phone.
Maybe your most powerful ward is not salt, iron, or a candle burned down to the glass. Maybe it is the tiny gray moon of Do Not Disturb glowing on your screen while somebody else’s emergency tries to become your afternoon. That counts.
You don’t need a cloak. You don’t need a coven. You don’t need to whisper over a bowl of rainwater while the moon minds her business overhead. Though honestly, there are worse ways to spend a Thursday.
You know a threshold when you see one.
You know not everyone who knocks is a guest. Some people arrive with muddy shoes and a story that somehow ends with you apologizing. Some people call it “just checking in” when what they mean is “please hold my chaos for a while.” Some people don’t want your love. They want your availability.
A person who pays attention learns the difference. She knows where the path ends and the brambles begin. She knows what gets invited inside, what gets left on the porch, and what gets buried behind the shed with the other things that no longer need a name. The world may call that antisocial. Fine.
The world also thinks a phone ringing means you owe it your hand. A person who pays attention knows better. She prunes. Not because she hates the garden, but because she wants it to live. Dead stems come off. Choking vines get cut back. Anything that steals sun from the roots has to go.
People are not plants, technically, though a few do behave like invasive mint.
You learn this with age. Or grief. Or one too many conversations that leave you feeling like someone opened every window in your house during a storm.
So you begin to tend your life differently. You stop attaching a legal brief to every no. You stop mistaking access for intimacy. You stop letting people wander through your inner rooms just because they once knew you when the wallpaper was different.
This is not coldness.
This is housekeeping.
Your grandmother may not have called it witchcraft. She may have called it having sense, locking the door, and not telling everybody your business.
Your therapist might call it boundaries.
Your group chat might call it “being mysterious.”
We call it paying attention.
Not the costume version. The practical kind. The kind that notices patterns, recognizes a bad explanation, and understands that survival rarely arrives with theatrical music.
A person who pays attention knows when to disappear for a while.
She knows silence can be medicine. She knows rest is not a moral failure. She knows solitude is not always loneliness. Sometimes it is the only room where your own voice can come back from wherever it went to hide.
And when it does, you listen. You listen when your stomach tightens before you say yes. You listen when a room feels wrong. You listen when someone’s apology has no weight behind it. You listen when your body says, “We have been here before, and I would rather not.” That, too, is a kind of knowing. No lightning bolt. No prophecy. No theatrical music swelling in the background. Just the old animal wisdom of a person who finally believes herself.
This is why the old hedge still matters here. Not as costume. Not as a personality quiz with herbs attached. As a line of attention. The place where curiosity notices who is asking for access, who benefits from your softness, and which explanations arrive wearing clean shoes over muddy intentions.
So maybe you don’t cast circles.
Maybe you screen calls.
Maybe you leave early.
Maybe you salt the soup, lock the back door, delete the paragraph, block the number, cancel the plan, water the basil, and go to bed before anyone can talk you out of your own good sense.
Maybe you have been called too much, too quiet, too private, too hard to reach.
That is not isolation.
That is protection.
That is not bitterness.
That is discernment.
That is not a phase.
That is the hedge growing back.
